At least 40 paramedics of a government hospital at Sola in Ahmedabad were issued show-cause notices for performing garba in the dialysis unit on Monday soon after it was inaugurated by state health minister Nitin Patel. The paramedics of Sola Civil Hospital on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway near Gujarat High Court in Ahmedabad performed garba inside the newly inaugurated dialysis centre as patients looked on. The male hospital staff, clad in white overcoats, and nurses in uniform danced to the tunes of loud garba music soon after Nitin Patel inaugurated the unit.
After the inauguration of the dialysis ward by the minister at 10 am, the paramedics started performing garba at around 12 noon. The performance went on for almost 30 minutes where the staff was seen dancing in a circle inside the ward which was also decorated with balloons.
Refuting charges of planning a garba on loud music inside the ward where patients were admitted, medical superintendent H K Bhavsar said, “The garba was not at all in the hospital’s inauguration schedule. This was entirely on the paramedics’ call. The hospital authorities have no role in this. Also, this is not inside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as it has been circulated, but the new dialysis ward.”
On the basis of video-footage provided to the hospital authorities, 40 paramedics have been identified who were involved in the act that violates the hospital norms. They have been served with show-cause notices. The hospital authorities also revealed that, along with the nurses and servants, a few attendants of the patients were also seen performing garba with them.
“Since we do not have CCTV cameras inside the ward, we have taken the grab from a local news channel and identified 40 of the hospital staff. This has confirmed that no doctor was involved in this and all are paramedics. But when we came to know about this, we immediately stopped them. Notices have been issued to all of them seeking explanation,” added Bhavsar. Nitin Patel has also sought a report from the hospital authorities.
When contacted, no hospital staff was willing to speak to the media.
